“U Herd” Brings Marshall Experience to a New Level
The Doulton Gang's Webite
With the excitement of a new football season and coach, a local hip-
hop duo expresses a new sense of pride through their lyrics.
The Doulton Gang, comprised of Tevin Courts a.k.a. Mr. Gold and Rob
Johnson a.k.a. R.O.B., has April 21 debut release of the “U Herd” song
as a way of providing motivation and spirit to campus, and to bring
the stands together, young and old, with a fresh anthem of pride.
The idea for the song developed in a recording studio. When it came
to the lyrics, Johnson and Courts looked at Marshall’s history and
applied their own Marshall experience to the lyrics.
As a Marshall student, Courts wanted the song to include some of his
personal college experience. By discussing the places where he goes to
study and the activities he does at nighttime, Courts hoped his lyrics
would make fellow students feel a connection to the Gang.
Once the concept was established, it took Courts and Johnson about
two to three days to complete the song lyrics. After that, Troy Collins,
Victor T Productions president, worked with both Courts and Johnson to
produce the beat.
Courts and Johnson told Collins the kind of beat they wanted for the
song. After bouncing ideas back and forth in the studio, Collins was
able to find a sound that both Courts and Johnson liked. The beat not
only satisfied the vision both Doulton Gang members had for the song,
but complemented the impact the lyrics make.
“U Herd” is aimed primarily as an anthem for the football team and
Courts said the reasoning behind this was to provide the team with
something to rock out to. The Gang also felt football is a large part of
the community because they believe when people think of Marshall,
the football team is what comes to mind.
